Robotic welding technicians set up, operate, and tend to robots that weld, braze, solder, and heat treat metal products, components, and assemblies. They sometimes work long weeks and odd hours depending on the specifications and time constraints of the job.
Robotic Weld Technician
Robotic welding technicians work in a welding cell, building or modifying fixtures for new designs and products. They produce weldments (anything formed by welding) ranging from multiple components to completed products.
They program the robotic welding system for each individual job using a terminal or pendant controls, plus troubleshoot machine or programming issues. In many instances, mathematical calculations are needed to prepare the product or set up the machine.
Robotic Welding Shop Managers
If you're the manager of a robotic welding shop, you'll share the responsibilities of technicians, be expected to uphold daily production schedule of cells, and inspect the quality of parts produced. Keeping your work environment safe and up to standard is also a key component of your work.
As a manager, you will train and develop operators and helpers, and ensure production quantities are properly reported.
Robotic Welding Job Requirements
To get a robotic welding job, you'll need to be able to read manufacturing prints, flat sheets, and shop drawings. Being asked to complete a welder level 3 assessment is common. And becoming certified as a welder level B will make you a more qualified candidate.
A robotic welding tech must know how to use measuring devices such as tape measure and dial calipers. Between 2 to 3 years of experience welding MIG can help your job prospects a lot. A degree, certificate, or other vocational program in manufacturing or engineering would look great on your resume too.
Robotic Welder Physical and Work History Requirements
Physical requirements common when applying for a robotic welder position include standing for eight hours, bending over, reaching overhead, and pivoting and pushing. These are all a part of the job, and it is typical to be required to lift 50 lbs of material.
Having a strong attendance record, in addition, also makes robotic welders. Overtime opportunities are also common in this position. Since robotic welders are responsible for the material flow in and out of the work cell, organization and time management skills are also important.
